Senior
Citizen Activity Centers
The Council on Aging Senior Citizen Activity Centers serve as
community focal points through which older persons receive meals,
supportive services and can participate in planned socialization,
recreation, education, and health maintenance activities. Wellness
This service includes information and training for senior
citizens in good health practices. Trained medical professionals,
check blood pressure, hearing, vision, and cholesterol on
a regular basis at senior centers.
Recreation
Senior citizens are provided many different ways to use and
enjoy free time. Group social activities, art, crafts, hobbies,
games, trips and physical activities are all available.
Transportation
Transportation is available for Senior Citizens to meal sites,
banks, medical facilities, and for shopping. Transportation
is available daily but must be requested and scheduled. Transportation
is also provided to medical facilities in LaPlace, New Orleans,
and Houma. Medical transportation must be requested as far
in advance as possible.
Home-Delivered Meals
A hot nutritious meal is delivered Monday through Friday to
eligible homebound elderly persons. Frozen meals for weekends
are provided. This is a limited service.
Congregate Meals
A hot nutritious meal is served Monday through Friday in a
group setting at the sites listed below:

Outreach
This service includes seek and search activities to identify
isolated and hard to reach individuals in order to assist
them in gaining access to needed services. Information and Assistance
The council on Aging provides information on available resources,
depending on each individual's needs. Referrals are made for
clients and are followed up to assure receipt of services.
Utility Assistance
Helping Hands and similar programs assist low income elderly
and disabled persons with energy expenses on an emergency
basis. Assistance can take the form of payment of an electric,
gas or other fuel bill.
Material Aid
Emergency Assistance is available for medicine. This program
is limited and based on need.
Safe Harbor
A home repair program for low-income senior citizens. Volunteer
organizations provide the labor.
Case Management
A case manager coordinates, monitors, and arranges for the
delivery of services to meet the needs of high risk elderly
clients.
Crime Prevention
Includes efforts to educate seniors in ways to protect their
property and persons.
Homemaker
Provides assistance with light housework to homebound seniors.
Personal Care
Provides personal assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming
to homebound senior citizens.
Medical Alert
A Personal Emergency Response System is available to summon
help in an emergency.
Legal Assistance
This service makes legal representation, counseling and information
accessible to the elderly.
